Freelance work (1998 - present)
- Writing and publishing articles about wine for magazines and

- Produced a monthly events listing column for the Toronto branch
of the Editors' Association of Canada newsletter Edition from
June 2001 to December 2003
- Created and maintained a website and its instruction manual
for The Silicon Network, a Toronto IT recruitment company
- Ghost wrote several chapters of a high school mathematics textbook
in which I created scenarios to show, in a practical way, how
interest rates, investments and savings plans work
- Produced stories for Kids Tribute, a magazine about movies
for 8-12 year olds
- Copyediting, indexing and proofreading projects for a range
of publications including Nurturing Assistance, a 154 page
guide to programs available for mothers with physical disabilities
for the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto
- Promotional magazine containing stories, suggestions and recipes
for a range of goods produced by Unilever Canada for Ogilvy One,
a leading direct marketing advertising agency
- A series of teaching guides for high school history classes
for the Toronto District Board of Education
Contract work (1998 - present)
- In October 2006, I joined Dundee Securities in Toronto to work
part-time in the desktop publishing and research department. Duties
include copyediting and formatting a range of documents produced
by the research department, from one-page news releases to 100+
page summaries of companies or sectors. I am also responsible
for the preparation of an email-based newsletter that goes out
to thousands of clients. I regularly work remotely with colleagues
in Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.
- From 1998 to 2006, I worked part-time desktop publishing and
editing for N M Rothschild & Sons Canada, an investment bank.
I prepared presentation-quality documents for high profile blue
chip clients. Working in the evening, I copyedited and designed
slide shows, company information memoranda books and colour presentation
booklets. I regularly worked remotely with colleagues in Montreal,
New York and London.
UK freelance work (1992 - 1998)
- Considerable medical copyediting work for doctors and scientists
submitting papers, including a 350-page PhD thesis on spinal injuries.
- Copyedited Nanotechnology in Medicine and the Biosciences (Gordon
and Breach, London, 1996), a 283-page textbook with over 20 contributors
- Worked as "External Indexer" for the Hulton Getty
picture library. I created headlines and summaries of thousands
of pictures from CDs for the company's bank of images
- Occasional freelance advertising copywriting work producing
recruitment advertising ideas and copy for a number of major London
recruitment advertising agencies including PA Consulting Group,
MSL Advertising, MDK, and Riley
UK work (1988 - 1998)
1992 - 1998 Imperial College School of Medicine, London. Academic
Administrator
Provided administrative support for the academic activities of
the Orthopaedic Surgery Department. Duties included producing and
circulating annual teaching programs and detailed session programs.
I also assisted in the editing and preparation of submissions to
conferences and seminars, produced slides for teaching sessions
and launched departmental website.
1988 - 1990 PA Consulting Group, London. Advertising Copywriter
Produced a full range of recruitment advertising concepts and copy
for clients, many of whom were major British corporations. Projects
also included creating brochures, information booklets and radio
advertising scripts.
Education
B.A. ( English). University of Toronto. Graduated with high distinction.
I have also taken numerous short courses and seminars on, among
other things, creative writing, copyediting, proofreading, HTML,
Javascript, Windows, Microsoft Office, PageMaker, wine and spirits,
and magazine publishing. I have achieved the Advanced Certificate
and am currently working towards the Diploma qualification from
the London-based Wine and Spirits Education Trust, known internationally
as the Independent Wine Education Guild.
