Trya Kacaba

Kacaba wines have won gold medals and awards, including a few from Cuvee, the Oscars of the Ontario wine industry. The boutique winery near Vineland was founded by Toronto lawyer Michael Kacaba and edges towards "premium" in the price bracket and "small" in the volume dept. Here are my notes on a couple of newly released wines - good Ontario standard-bearer grapes too: a cab franc and a chard.

Kacaba Cabernet Franc 2008

Very fruity nose with lots of lighter red berries and a hint of herbal. Gentle cabernet franc notes of green pepper and more herbal jump out on the palate and there’s a nice touch of cedar/oak. Quite full bodied, but moderate tannins and oak so it’s smooth. Good acidity and fresh finish resolving to prune plum and vanilla. A solid effort on a bigger red in such a so-so year in Niagara.

Vintages 272146 | $18.95

Kacaba Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2009

Darker nose with cedar and vanilla notes with apple fruit. Fairly crisp acidity and obvious toasty oak notes, including wood and smoke.  Citrus/lemon flavours keep it fresh and there’s a bit of white fruit and some sweet corn. This is a fuller bodied chardonnay for oak lovers.

Vintages 262436 | $22.95
