Mission Hill SLC Syrah

From the southernmost vineyards in the Okanagan - right on the US border, where some of BC's biggest reds come from - this vintage is a little more muted. According to the Vintage Report by the winemaker, "temperatures from summer through fall were about long-term average but cooler than the past two years..."

Mission Hill SLC Select Lot Collection Syrah 2006. $39
Okanagan Valley, BC

Rich and fruity nose with ripe dark berry and plum fruit and a hint of spice. No pepper notes that I could detect. Fairly big on the palate, with good acidity and chalky tannins. The fruit’s a bit more muted than expected and there are notes of tobacco and a decent level of complexity with some earthiness too. Very nice smooth finish with the damson/plum fruit coming back and lingering. 88 points.
