Wine writer Lindsay Groves is a big backer of Ontario sparklers and is planning to set up a blind-taste challenge pitting Canadian sparklers against the real deal, champagne.
I thought I'd take advantage of a summer social wine tasting of a small group of regular tasters and see how Piper-Heidsieck NV, kindly donated by Select Wines, would do against Ontario's finest.
2 people picked Piper-Heidsieck as the best.
2 people picked Jackson Triggs Proprietors Grand Reserve 2004 as the best.
2 people picked Cuvee Catharine Brut as the best.
1 person picked 13th Street Winery's Cuvee Thirteen as the best.
I was certain I'd like the Piper best, but I picked the Jackson-Triggs, ranking Piper in second place.
The six wines included in the test:
Piper-Heidsieck NV
Jackson Triggs Proprietors Grand Reserve 2004
Henry of Pelham Cuvee Catharine Brut
13th Street Winery's Cuvee Thirteen
Trius Brut by Hillebrand Winery
Andres Baby Duck
