Coppola: Celebrity Claret

Francis Ford Coppola is, according to the Los Angeles Times, " a Hollywood outcast by choice." Wine enthusiasts at both ends of the market know that he's been very focused on wine these past few years, with good results overall.

Coppola made his name - and, presumably, a fortune - directing the hugely successful Godfather series of films in the early 1970s as well as the seminal war movie Apocalypse Now in 1979. He produced his first vintage from Rubicon Estate in Rutherford in 1977 and the wine business is now his most important source of income.

In what surely must be a reversal of the usual celebrity math whereby sports or entertainment earnings are invested in wine, Coppola has financed and is distributing his latest film called "Tetro," a family drama set in Buenos Aires. LA times blogger Claudia Eller is amused by his heavy handed product placement.

In particular, he's linking his Francis Coppala Diamond Claret line to the film. It is of course a meritage blend.
