Australia is not only the world's driest continent, it's also been experiencing a prolonged drought for several years. It's been dubbed "The Big Dry," and it just keeps getting worse. One of the hardest hit areas has been the state of South Australia.
While the prognosis for reliable water supply for the capital Adelaide - a city as big as Calgary or Edmonton - is worrying, one bright spot has been the resilience of the grapevines. The Barossa Valley and other important winegrowing areas are in South Australia, and in the one upbeat note in this bleak Economist article on the situation, Craig Wilson of Bremerton Winery in Langhorn Creek has reaffirmed that stress is good for grapevines.
Within reason, of course: let's not forget there's no Sahara wine.
