Many LCBO staff have been enjoying the fuss over this super low priced Argentinian wine - from breathless recounting of how fast it's selling to nudge-nudge advice on when the next shipment is expected - and the most likely response you'll get when you try to buy some is "sold out".
One of my associates sourced a bottle. The verdict: it really is great value. I served a glass to a friend who'd heard of the name but that's about it. "It's the new cheap wine from Argentina," I told him and he asked how much. "Ten bucks," I said.
"It's good," he said, nodding approvingly. Then I told him it was 25% cheaper.
Fuzion Shiraz-Malbec 2008. $7.45
Rich nose of dark red fruit - cherries and plums - and a decent helping of earthy notes. Fairly full bodied, quite soft, but there's good acidity and the tannins haven't quite been beaten down to "easy drinking". There is some of the candied quality to the cherry and plum fruit that often comes at the bottom end of the price scale, but the woody notes and tannins do a good job of mitigating it. Very fruity overall, with a bit of sweetness and a modest finish. Great value - and better than Two-Buck Chuck. 85/86 points.
