Downturn? Not for Wine Sales

Wine sales continue to grow in Ontario, Vintages is growing at a faster rate than the LCBO as a whole, and there are more high end Canadian wines than ever. And outside of the manufacturing sector, there haven't been significant job losses... for now.

In the US, on the other hand, with the news from Wall Street and the labour markets bad, and the housing values plunging all over, you'd think that wine sales would tank. Slate's Mike Steinberger found the opposite - and goes so far as to suggest that wine may no longer be a "discretionary" item...

That was back in September. A couple of months on, however, things have changed. Note the figures on reduced wine auction prices and sales in New York. We will be watching for the final figures on this year's fine wine auction at Ritchies, part two of which happens in December.
